Thanks Ryan.

You give a healthy list of possible destinations there. But since they're all in Europe, I have to throw out some timely words of warning...

I might joke that Europe is on the very same "verge of collapsing" you joke about avoiding.

Okay, that's dramatic, because I believe the euro will survive. (read: I f'ing hope to God the euro survives)
But it's not dramatic to expect Europe to suffer a (second) major recession by year-end (2012/2013).

All told, a recession sure beats the euro collapsing, but in any case, Europe is not the prosperous beacon of hope for the short-term.

Ryan, with such fond memories of Australia, you might re-consider it again, or other countries in Oceania or SE Asia. Like Thai food? :-)

best,
-Jeff

Great reply to the post. I have always called it the "abused wife syndrome"
I have been enjoying your site so far. I am currently an American and for some time (10 years) have been thinking of moving to another country just not sure witch one yet. I have been to Australia and I absolutely loved that place. Was in Brisbane but spent a lot of time in a town called Rockhampton. I would like to go to Ireland, Netherlands, Germany, and maybe the UK to see which place is going to be the best place to live. and by best I mean, somewhere where I can start a family and not have to feel like its on the verge of collapsing.
I just wonder how long its going to be before the US starts eating it's self alive. another 20/30 years?

Baschy,

You're living in France, married to a Czech and have a Sri Lankan drivers license. Sounds complicated, but it's not.

Here's the bottom line: if you have a drivers license from an EU country, great- you're all set.
If not, you will need some paperwork and/or testing before you are driving 100% legally in Czech Republic. I can't think of any exceptions right now, but if someone posts one, I'll research it.

So, since you're living in France, can I assume you already have a (France-designated) EU drivers license?
Yes? - great. No? - time to visit a drivers school.

Hope that's clear,
-Jeff

It never ceases to amaze me how British and irish migrants fall over themselves to get to Australia to take advantage of the booming economy and the high wages, particularly in the mining industry.Yet despite the economic downturn in the US ,Americans won't make the move to Australia and our booming economy. How does $60.00 an hour grab you ?
5 weeks annual leave.Long service leave after so many years service.I could go on !!

Thanks Emilio for your comment,

So, if I understand correctly, your question is "Will I be able to exchange my current Spanish drivers license for a Czech license?" Right?

Since you have a current EU license, you are fine with driving in Czech Republic. You obviously know your license is an EU license, designed from Spain. It is not exclusive to (only for) driving in Spain.

Feel free to call a local school to be sure, but I'm confident you only need to renew it and pay for a new license. Either in Czech Republic or in Spain, you'll have to renew it, but you won't need to be tested more in one EU country than another.

Hope that helps,
- Jeff

Hi Jeff,

I am Spanish guy living in Prague since a few years... Up to know I have been driving with my Spanish driving license and no issues, even when stopped by the police they have accepted my Spanish form as it is similar to Czech one...

Just a question with regards to exams and stuff... My Spanish driving license is about to expire, May 2012, so I don't know if renew it in Spain or in Czech Republic. Definitely if I need to do some exam in CZ I would go to Spain, since there you don't as you already passed all your tests...

Thanks!!

I need some help...

I am a construction professional with 30+ years as an owner of a relatively large electrical contracting company. I want to work overseas (maybe for good). I have a Master Electrician's license from 3 states and I know my stuff.

I have sent out bunches of CV's but no response. I have no previous work experience overseas. I also am asking for high level jobs...( director, senior PM, VP)

Should I get with a recruiter? should I ask for less $$? should I just keep pounding the pavement until something shows up?

I would be grateful for any instruction or advice.
